EUGENE, Ore. – A leading Eugene area tattoo parlor gives customers the chance to get inked and help a national cause this weekend.
This time of year, the Muscular Dystrophy Association sells thousands of paper shamrocks across the nation, hoping to raise money for research, treatment, and more.
Typically, grocery stores and fast food restaurants sell the icons, but a local tattoo shop joined the fundraiser.
Tony McAlister is a tattoo artist at Anchored Ink in Eugene. He took time off from work Saturday to volunteer at a Muscular Dystrophy Association event Saturday.
“You know, when I first did it, I honestly wasn’t that into it,” McAlister said.
But, it was at the first event when he met a new friend, 10-year-old Jack Craig.
Craig has juvenile spinal muscular atrophy.
“And then I went and I saw how positive people who are suffering from this and it just changed my whole outlook on it,” McAlister said.
McAlister decided to sell the paper shamrocks to his customers. He said when they’re under the tattoo gun, there’s plenty of time to talk about why it’s important to support the cause.
“They’re not only getting something that they want, like a tattoo, they’re also helping other people,” he said.
The shamrocks help send local kids to camp in Salem and fund a monthly clinic at RiverBend Hospital.
“We look different, and that’s why it kind of touches my heart too. Most of the people with that disease, they look different too, but they’re still amazing people,” McAlister said.
Customers who buy a shamrock at anchored ink are entered into a drawing to win a free tattoo.
The Muscular Dystrophy Association will stop selling shamrocks on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17.
Dealing with mental health struggles in our society often means facing stigma and judgment, unfortunately. But some of those struggles — like self-harm — are harder to hide than others. Which is why one tattoo artist has been helping people move forward by offering free tattoos to cover their scars.
The artist, Whitney Develle, 22, is based in Brisbane, Australia at Garage Ink Brisbane. She originally posted on her Instagram account on March 1, offering 50 free spots through the end of the year. But because those filled up so quickly, she’s now offering discounted cover-ups to others who are still interested.
Covering up scars has become a very specific talent for some artists. For instance, there are those who specialize in giving women cover-up tattoos for their mastectomy scars. But self-harm scars often come with an extra-intense emotional component — and stigma, long after you’ve stopped cutting. For those who have stopped, getting a tattoo to cover the scars is often a symbolic decision to fully move on from that part of their lives.
Develle told 9 News in Australia that she was inspired to start the free tattoo offer by a friend who had struggled with both self-harm and an eating disorder. “She told me how much pain it brought her when people would question her about [her scars] or make comments,” Develle said.“No one should ever have to feel like a public museum for people to ridicule.”
Many of the people who have written to her since she posted the offer have said they were “too scared to speak with a tattooist out of fear of being judged,” which made Develle’s impulse to help even stronger.
Not everyone wants to completely cover their scars, though. For those who’ve found some relief through the Butterfly Project — a technique in which you’re encouraged to draw a butterfly on your skin rather than cut — a butterfly tattoo seems only natural. Of course, in the end should you choose to be inked, whatever you get should reflect your mental health journey however you see it.

From kings and maharajahs to dock workers, if you wanted a tattoo in late 19th-century London there was only one place to go: a salon above a Turkish bath house, where Sutherland Macdonald, the first professional tattoo artist in Britain, plied his trade.
Rare images of Macdonald and his work, as well as his business cards and client list, are to go on display later this month as part of an exhibition at the Museum of London.
It has recently emerged that Macdonald was the first person in the Post Office Directory, the Yellow Pages of its day, to offer a professional tattoo service in London. The publication created the category of tattooists for him in 1894, and he was the only entry under that heading for the next four years.
Matt Lodder, a lecturer in contemporary art and visual culture at the University of Essex who worked on the exhibition, said: “While tattooing was going on, there is no evidence of another professional studio in Britain at the time, working on paying customers.”
One DW Purdy had previously been thought to be the first person to open a tattoo parlour in London in 1870, but Dr Lodder’s research dispelled this as a “myth” from a book called Memoirs of a Tattooist attributed to tattoo artist George Burchett and published in 1953.
Dr Lodder found images of Macdonald’s work in locations including the National Archives and the zoological archive at Harvard University; they will go on public display for the first time at the Museum of London.
Jen Kavanagh, curator of the exhibition, Tattoo London, said: “Obviously tattooing existed in London before that, especially with travel and encounters with other cultures where tattooing was prominent. “But as for tattoo artists working in London, in the grand scheme of things it’s fairly recent.”
Macdonald worked in London’s Jermyn Street and was considered one of the pioneers, alongside Tom Riley and, later, Burchett. He said his clients ran from assorted dukes and maharajahs to the kings of Norway and Denmark.
Britain’s King Edward VII was tattooed in Jerusalem and his son George V acquired body art in Japan, sparking a trend among the public.
“One of the reasons Macdonald was so busy was because people wanted to copy the king,” Dr Lodder said. “Macdonald claimed to have tattooed George V, but he probably did not.”
He started with small, decorative images and quickly progressed to larger scale works of art, Dr Lodder said. These included Japanese dragons, copies of salon paintings by artists such as William-Adolphe Bouguereau and wildlife work by Archibald Thorburn. One client had an engraving by landscapist John Constable tattooed on to his body.
“Tattooing was going on as far back as the 16th century, but it was much more ad hoc, not people turning up and paying for a tattoo as a commodity until the late 19th century,” Dr Lodder said.
As well as London’s early tattooing history, the exhibition looks at how body art has developed over the past 40 years, concentrating on one existing studio that opened in each of the past four decades.
“The end of the 1970s is really interesting. It’s a Rubicon moment for tattoo history in several ways,” Dr Lodder said. “It’s sometimes referred to as the tattoo ‘renaissance’, driven by guys from America. It began to be seen as more of an art form. It all blossomed into the craziness we have today.”
There are now more parlours than ever before in London. “It’s been a really important part of the cultural fabric of this city,” Dr Lodder added. “It brings everyone together from kings and aristocrats to squaddies and their wives.”

MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Police are looking for more victims after a South Florida tattoo artist was arrested for sexually battery on a client.
Detectives said Louis Augustin, 35, is a self-employed tattoo artist in Northeast Miami-Dade who is also a registered sex offender.
According to the arrest report, Augustin was tattooing a female customer on her side torso Wednesday night, just below her breast down to her hip. As she was laying on her side, her pants were lowered passed her hips and the suspect then sexually assaulted her.
The victim jumped off the table and was able to get away.
It happened at 485 N.W. 71st Street.
Investigators are now looking to talk to anyone else who went might have received a tattoo from him.

Award winning Gray’s School of Art alumni Tomasz Wrobel launched the Newave Gallery on Castle Street on Friday with a solo exhibition of abstract landscape studies on the theme of ‘e-waste’, exploring how electronic waste decomposes in the natural world.
Following the closure of Aberdeen Art Gallery on Sunday, which will undergo a £30m redevelopment over the next two years, the launch of the Newave Gallery on Castle Street will provide an alternative for art aficionados to view contemporary pieces.
Tomasz, who works at George Street tattoo parlour Rebel Ink, will also have studio space within the new gallery to develop his artwork.
But despite running the gallery, Tomasz said he has no plans to swap ink for paint permanently.
He said: “Painting and drawing has always been a huge part of my life and the Newave Gallery will allow myself and other aspiring artists to have a platform to showcase our work to a wider audience outside of art school shows and private collections.
“As well as painting and running the gallery, I will still be tattooing at Rebel Ink as I love that side of my work too as it allows me to hone a completely different craft and style.”
The art gallery, which will open Monday to Saturday from 10am until 6pm, has been praised by Professor Chris O’Neil, head of Gray’s School of Art for developing the space for emerging artists in the city.
Professor O’Neil said: “There is a huge need for more creative spaces in the city so it is fantastic to see a graduate of Gray’s opening up a new gallery and studio space right in the centre of Aberdeen.
“We wish Tomasz all the best with his new venture and look forward to seeing how it develops in the future.”
