An ink expansion for downtown Bemidji: Your Mom's Tattoo Atelier set to reopen Wednesday after ...

BEMIDJI — After about three weeks, several downtown artists are eager to get back to the drawing board.

Make that the drawing arm … or neck … or back … or shoulder.

Your Mom’s Tattoo Atelier is set to reopen Wednesday after about three weeks of expanding and totally renovating its space at 110 Fourth St. NW in downtown Bemidji.

Your Mom’s bought the space next door, most recently the Grow Inside hydroponics business, and before that Althea’s Cakery, giving them much more room for their tattoo artists, body piercing and general merchandising.

“We needed to expand anyway, because we have two apprentices right now and only two booths and we have four artists,” owner and tattoo artist Mike Wiltse said. “And the two apprentices need booths to start working, so we decided to do some renovations and take over the other side so they can start working and get their careers launched.”

The renovation also provides more room for Jeremy Van Wert, who runs his own body piercing business, Industrial Tech Body Mods, out of the location.

Work started on Dec. 22, and Wiltse said the majority of people have been understanding about the renovations. They are already taking new appointments. “They are loyal customers,” he said.

January also marks the eighth anniversary for Your Mom’s, all spent at the downtown location. As a custom tattoo shop, Your Mom’s doesn’t feature what is called “flash” tattooing, where there are books of tattoos people can choose, he said. Artist portfolios are available, but work is done by appointment and one-on-one with customers.

“We want to still remain as an arts studio,” Wiltse said.”So when people come in, they have an idea and we can draw it out and can utilize our talents as artists.”

Through the years, Wiltse and others at the shop have seen how tattooing has evolved. While lower back tattoos were all the rage when he first started, they are hardly done anymore, he said.

Still, the art form remains popular, from small to medium tattoos that can take just one session, to larger pieces that may take six months to a year to complete. (The skin needs to heal in between sessions.)

Another area of growth is in body piercing. Van Wert said the industry has gone from more of an “underground, extreme” genre to more mainstream.

OK, about the name?

“There’s all kinds of stories,” Wiltse joked. “Of course, there’s your mom, you gotta love your mom; and ‘mom’ (tattoos) are synonymous with tattoos. We also used to have a lot of ‘your mom’ jokes over at the other shops I worked at and they were always kinda pretty funny, so I was thinking, ‘Hey we could combine it all into one and make it into a shop name and it sticks in people’s heads.’ It’s versatile in a lot of funny ways.”

While they will be open Wednesday, a grand reopening party is scheduled 4 to 6 p.m. Jan. 30.

Your Mom’s can be reached at (218) 333-1576, online at www.yourmomstattooatelier.com as well as on Facebook.

Man Arrested, Charged, After Cat Found with Arrow Piercing Its Body

HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. — A 22 year old Lazy Circle man has been arrested and charged after police say shot a cat with an arrow.

Buddy Rayvon Leger III is charged with felonious cruelty to animals.

On August 26th, the victim arrived home from a funeral to find one of her cats lying on her bed with an arrows in its body.  The cat survived the attack but had to be euthanized due to the extent of the injury.

Haywood County Sheriff’s Office deputies received information Thursday evening pointing to a possible suspect in the crime. During the course of the investigation, deputies took into evidence arrows that appeared to be like the one found in the cat.

Leger was arrested at approximately 8:30 p.m. Thursday and charged with felonious cruelty to animals – maiming a domestic cat by shooting it with a bow and arrow.

He was released on a $5,000 unsecured bond.

Amy Croffey for Daily Mail Australia

He might look as if butter wouldn’t melt in his swish wine-coloured suit for Network Ten’s The Bachelorette Australia, but Davey Lloyd has a cheeky side and he’s not afraid to show it off.

Although the 25-year-old carpenter from Sydney’s Northern Beaches could pass as an Australian James Bond in his two-piece, the party loving prankster has already flashed his bum tattoo at Sam Frost.

Last month Sam opened up to Daily Mail Australia at Myer’s Spring 2015 Fashion Launch about seeing the inking that reads ‘Your Name…’ across the left side of his buttocks.

The 26-year-old didn’t seem to mind getting an eyeful and couldn’t help but giggle when she opened up about it.

‘Yes I’ve seen it,’ Sam told DMA.

No doubt a fan of the tradesman’s adventurous side, she added: ‘I think he’s a legend. Good on him.’

The mark is surely used as the perfect pick-up line when he’s cruising Narrabeen Beach on Sydney’s North Shore for ladies.

Prankster Davey is the youngest bachelor vying for Sam’s attention and according to his Bachelorette biography he’s a bit of a ladies’ man, but has been heartbroken in the past.

‘Highly energetic and with a cheeky positive outlook on life, surfer Davey wears his heart on his sleeve when it comes to relationships and admits he falls in love too easily,’ he added.

‘This mischievous bachelor is looking to put an end to his persistent heartbreak and find lasting love.’

Kayne Buik, 25, from Western Australia is another bachelor with an eye-catching tattoo.

‘The new addition’: Kayne posted this snap on social media leading many to suggest he has won

The mining electrician got a colourful rose on his arm after the show wrapped giving serious hints that he is the winner of the show. He wasn’t shy about showing off the eye-catching piece with the caption, ‘the new addition’, alongside an emoji of the same bloom.

His fellow Bachelorette co-star, muscular plumber Dave Billsborrow joked in a caption under the snap: ‘I don’t get it. What’s with the rose?’

He also quit his fly-in fly-out job to possibly move closer to Sam’s Bondi pad on the other side of the country

‘Last day of fifo [fly-in fly-out] for a very, very long time! Bring on the better things in life :),’ he wrote under a shot of a plane alongside an emoji of a rose.

You can see more of Sam’s inked up bachelors on The Bachelorette Wednesday, September 23, at 7.30pm on Network Ten.

Manchester City Fan Gets United Tattoo After Raising £10000 for Son

For 38-year-old Manchester City fan Mark Pinder, the sight of the Manchester United crest would be one of disgust.

But now that he’s got it branded on his leg in ink form, it’s a source of happiness to an extent.

Pinder‘s 12-year-old son Kirk has muscular dystrophy, which causes one’s muscles to slowly deteriorate. It’s incurable.

“All you can do is watch your child deteriorate in front of you,” he told the Manchester Evening News (h/t the Independent).

After spending years with his head buried in the sand, as he puts it, he decided to make good of the awful situation. He pledged that if he raised £10,000 to donate to the Duchenne Now charity, which will help trials and research for muscular dystrophy, he’d get the crest of City’s archrivals tattooed on his leg.

Respect.

“I’m buzzing now that I’ve done it,” he said, per the same Independent piece.

He also sold off a boxing glove and a book, both signed by boxing legend Ricky Hatton, as part of his fundraising efforts.

Mum closing tattoo shop to look after sick daughter

A TATTOO artist from Grays who is closing down her business to look after her sick daughter is putting out a last call to her regular customers.

Kerry Jones, 44, is giving up the business to care for her daughter, Paige Wilson, 15, after doctors diagnosed a deteriorating condition a few months ago.

Paige has suffered from pulmonary hypertension since she was a little girl.

It is a rare blood vessel disorder which causes sufferers to be in a wheelchair some of the time and on oxygen every night.

One of the heartbreaking aspects of the illness, which causes damage to the heart and lungs, is that while a sufferer looks fine on the outside, the inside tells a very different story.

Mum Kerry, of Highfield Gardens, Grays said: “I’m closing the business down now to look after her after having been there for ten years.”

She is hopeful as Paige has already pulled through for far longer than doctors said she would.

She said: “They only gave her five years to live six years ago and we are amazed we have made it this far.

“She’s a strong girl and we are planning her prom already this year.”

The family still have hope that a heart and double lung transplant could save Paige, and are waiting for her to be put on a waiting list for adult patients when she turns 16.

Meanwhile, Kerry is sending out the final call to her regular customers before her studio, Lady Tattoo, in St Chad’s Road, closes in August as many tattoo artists won’t touch another artist’s unfinished work.

She said: “Having been there for ten years, I don’t want customers with unfinished tattoos to miss out.”

Five suffer serious skin infections after using tattoo and piercing studio in Newport

A woman with a belly button piercing. People who had piercings from a particular studio in Newport are being offered checks.

HEALTH checks are being offered to customers of a former piercing and tattoo studio in Newport.

A total of 550 former clients of the business have been offered the precautionary checks after five customers who had piercings all suffered serious skin infections according to health chiefs.

The premises concerned traded as Blue Voodoo, Sun Tattoo Studio and Flesh Wound at two premises in Commercial Street, Newport, between May 2013 and January 2015, said Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

The connection between the people who suffered skin infections was spotted by a doctor who treated four of them.

But the health board said the confirmed cases could indicate a low risk of transmission of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C and an extremely low risk of HIV transmission for all clients of the premises concerned.

The people sent letters offering them checks will be able to have a blood test to check for all three, although officials have stressed there is a very small risk of picking up any blood borne infections through piercing or tattooing.

No cases of HIV transmission from tattooing or piercing have been documented worldwide, according to Dr Brendan Mason, consultant epidemiologist for Public Health Wales, who was at a press conference this morning.

The board said the business/s concerned had ceased trading and were being investigated by Newport Council’s environmental health team.

Clinics staffed by specialist nurses have been set up in the health board area and a helpline has been set up for people to book an appointment – tel: 02920 402528.

Lions fan loses bet, has to get Cowboys' star tattoo after Dallas' wild-card win

As things turned out, it was unfortunate – and painful – for Detroit Lions fan Jaime Valdez that he and Tony Leal, a friend and lifelong Cowboys fan, were at the home of tattoo artist Chris Garcia when Detroit lost to Green Bay in its regular-season finale and wound up in a wild-card playoff against Dallas.

According to a story on mlive.com, Valdez and Leal were discussing a friendly wager when Garcia suggested they bet a tattoo on the game.

“We were just talking about betting,” Valdez said. “So Critter (Chris Garcia) said, ‘Why don’t you guys bet each other a tattoo. Loser gets the winner’s tattoo.’ So we were both OK with it so we spit on our hands and shook on it.”

Dallas’ rally from a 14-0 deficit to a 24-20 win meant Valdez would have to adorn his body with the Cowboys’ star logo.

“The deal is it had to be at least the size of a silver dollar, it looks more like a 10-cent piece,” Leal said of the tatoo on his friend’s upper right arm.

The tattoo must stay on his skin for one year per the deal, then he can choose to have it covered up.
