Eugene tattoo artist takes part in national muscular dystrophy fundraiser

EUGENE, Ore. – A leading Eugene area tattoo parlor gives customers the chance to get inked and help a national cause this weekend.

This time of year, the Muscular Dystrophy Association sells thousands of paper shamrocks across the nation, hoping to raise money for research, treatment, and more.

Typically, grocery stores and fast food restaurants sell the icons, but a local tattoo shop joined the fundraiser.

Tony McAlister is a tattoo artist at Anchored Ink in Eugene. He took time off from work Saturday to volunteer at a Muscular Dystrophy Association event Saturday.

“You know, when I first did it, I honestly wasn’t that into it,” McAlister said.

But, it was at the first event when he met a new friend, 10-year-old Jack Craig.

Craig has juvenile spinal muscular atrophy.

“And then I went and I saw how positive people who are suffering from this and it just changed my whole outlook on it,” McAlister said.

McAlister decided to sell the paper shamrocks to his customers. He said when they’re under the tattoo gun, there’s plenty of time to talk about why it’s important to support the cause.

“They’re not only getting something that they want, like a tattoo, they’re also helping other people,” he said.

The shamrocks help send local kids to camp in Salem and fund a monthly clinic at RiverBend Hospital.

“We look different, and that’s why it kind of touches my heart too. Most of the people with that disease, they look different too, but they’re still amazing people,” McAlister said.

Customers who buy a shamrock at anchored ink are entered into a drawing to win a free tattoo.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association will stop selling shamrocks on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17.

Ford Making Police Cars That Halt Armor-Piercing Bullets

While shootouts between police and criminals who have high-powered, armor-piercing rifles are still somewhat low in number, they are becoming more common. Ford is making vehicles that will have interesting new capabilities.

Ford will be making police cars that stop exceedingly high-speed bullets.

These will be the first of their kind, vehicles with doors that protect against armor-piercing .30-caliber rifle bullets and are rated for pursuit – meaning that they have the pick-up to follow at high speed. The cars will be built according to U.S. Department of Justice standards to a level called Type IV, meaning they are more advanced than most vehicles already owned by police stations in the United States. 

The panels will be optional and will have ballistic capabilities – able to resist objects projected at high speeds. 

“Ford is well-known in the police community for going further to enhance officer safety. It’s what our product is all about, first and foremost,” noted Raj Sarkar, a general marketing manager at Ford.

Such a ballistics panel is one with “hard armor or plate inserts that have been tested against .30 caliber…bullets” with certain specified mass and velocity, according to the Department of Justice standard. 

Shootouts between police and criminals who have high-powered, armor-piercing rifles are still low in number but are becoming more common. “The fact that we design our Police Interceptors around officer feedback is what has made them number one. Officers globally told us they needed protection from armor piercing ammunition and we added increased ballistic protection to an already great product – that’s continuous innovation,” said Arie Groeneveld, the chief engineer at Ford Police Interceptors.

These new Type IV panels are a step up and an optional choice different from existing panels from Ford that protect against ballistics.

Type III ballistic panels are already being used by agencies around the U.S. They are rated to fend off bullets up to .30 caliber of a type that don’t pierce armor or from handguns, as well as certain special threats noted by the Los Angeles Police Department.

The automobiles will also include advanced technology that helps protect against a crash: It contributes to absorbing the collision’s energy and to moving forces of impact away from occupants. There are also crumple zones at strategic points in the car’s frame or body to further dissipate and absorb any crash energy to diminish the changes of intrusion into the seating compartment. 

Materials such as advanced plastics, aluminum and boron steel also make the car stronger. The vehicles have also been subjected to 75-mph test ratings for rear crashes.

This 22-Year-Old Artist Gave Out Free Tattoos For An Amazing Reason

Dealing with mental health struggles in our society often means facing stigma and judgment, unfortunately. But some of those struggles — like self-harm — are harder to hide than others. Which is why one tattoo artist has been helping people move forward by offering free tattoos to cover their scars.

The artist, Whitney Develle, 22, is based in Brisbane, Australia at Garage Ink Brisbane. She originally posted on her Instagram account on March 1, offering 50 free spots through the end of the year. But because those filled up so quickly, she’s now offering discounted cover-ups to others who are still interested.

Covering up scars has become a very specific talent for some artists. For instance, there are those who specialize in giving women cover-up tattoos for their mastectomy scars. But self-harm scars often come with an extra-intense emotional component — and stigma, long after you’ve stopped cutting. For those who have stopped, getting a tattoo to cover the scars is often a symbolic decision to fully move on from that part of their lives.

Develle told 9 News in Australia that she was inspired to start the free tattoo offer by a friend who had struggled with both self-harm and an eating disorder. “She told me how much pain it brought her when people would question her about [her scars] or make comments,” Develle said.“No one should ever have to feel like a public museum for people to ridicule.”

Many of the people who have written to her since she posted the offer have said they were “too scared to speak with a tattooist out of fear of being judged,” which made Develle’s impulse to help even stronger.

Not everyone wants to completely cover their scars, though. For those who’ve found some relief through the Butterfly Project — a technique in which you’re encouraged to draw a butterfly on your skin rather than cut — a butterfly tattoo seems only natural. Of course, in the end should you choose to be inked, whatever you get should reflect your mental health journey however you see it.
