A few months ago, when we were in Toledo, Ohio, we spotted a small item in the Toledo City Paper about a tattoo artist named Brian Finn.

Finn has been tattooing for nearly 20 years. These days, he does it on his days off, too — but not for just anyone. On those days, he’s creating tattoos for people with scars caused by trauma: domestic violence, human trafficking or self-inflicted.

And he’s offering these tattoos for free.

“Otherwise, you know, they wouldn’t be able to get that done. Maybe they don’t have the money for it,” Finn says. “The cost of equipment isn’t that much. It just takes up my time, so if I can make somebody’s day better — or life better — just covering up a scar from a bad experience, I sleep a little better.”

Maddie Keating read the article in the paper, too. The 20-year-old had scars on her arms — from self-inflicted wounds — that she wanted to cover up.

“I started cutting when I was about 12,” Keating says. “I entered into a really deep depression, so for about six or seven years, I was pretty heavily self-harming.”

One of the places Keating cut herself the most was on her left forearm. Now, having come out on the other side of her depression, she says she doesn’t “want it quite that visible all the time.”

Keating hasn’t cut herself in years, and while she’s not ashamed of the scars on her arms, they are a reminder “of a really dark, hard time.”

She couldn’t afford the design she wanted — an ornate, stylized black-and-white rose — so she emailed Finn, asking “what’s the catch?” There wasn’t one. The two emailed back and forth for a few weeks, then set a date for the appointment.

The tattoo itself took about an hour and a half.

“It’s gorgeous,” Keating says. “And to think that I used to look at my arm and think ‘Wow, that’s so sad that I was so sad,’ and now I get to have this beautiful rose that Brian drew for me.”

As she watched Finn tattoo over her scars, she thought about how far she’s come.

“It felt almost like coming full circle. Out of emotional pain, I brought myself physical pain. And now, I took a little bit of physical pain for something really beautiful,” Keating says. “And it’s really nice to think that anybody that I meet will see something so beautiful and be able to appreciate it with me.”

Tattoo not allowing your Apple Watch to work? Team Coco says Apple has the solution

I wonder how big of an issue this actually is, tats are very popular these days. I have full sleeves on both arms, and if it doesn’t work right, it’s going back pronto. Cmon Apple…

I’m honestly shocked that anyone even made it home with the watches before they found out that they had issues with it, seeing as Apple has every potential Apple Watch customer go through some sort of in store experience prior to buying the device. I think you should take a trip down to your nearest Apple store and find out for yourself how big of an issue this actually is.

Tried it doesn’t work.. I have full wrist tattoos that connect with my sleeves, Android wearables and pebbles seem to work fine, I haven’t tried anything else.

I’m considering the Gear S, if the AW doesn’t work for me. have you tried it? Obviously as an iOS first user, the AW is my first choice, but I love the way the Gear S looks too, and it’s a stand alone.

So people are going to buy the watch only to measure their heart rates? lol

5. SamDH1 (Posts: 61; Member since: 21 Apr 2015)

No it needs to detect the heart rate of the user so it can work for some features for some reason

That was my understanding of the impact of the issue, though I can see this getting fixed with a software update, unfortunately that could also impact other functionality including but not limited to battery life.

It would be encouraging if they could fix it with a software upgrade if the Android Wear watches are indeed capable of seeing past this some how. Although if it is a hardware limitation issue this may be a problem.

It’s beyond me how Android Wear devices measure heart rate as I’ve never looked into the issue, I’m assuming it’s an alternative method/sensor as I have not heard of this issue before the release of the Apple Watch. I think that Apple will just have to make this feature a user option that can be turned on or off, otherwise they risk alienating loyal members of their market.

Darkjedi for example was incredibly hyped for the release of the new iPhone and Apple watch as he has expressed this many times in the comments section of this site, but now the new watch may not even work for him. Frankly if it were me, I would be very upset to have something like this happen. This isn’t intended to be a “shame on Apple” comment, it’s just expressing the frustration of the circumstances.
