Singer Liz Graham Folks It Up On Her Upcoming Album

By Layla Marino

unnamed-1Liz Graham is a well-established folk singer and songwriter from Nyack, New York. With her operatic voice and the slightly unconventional key in which she normally writes her music, she found success with her self-titled album in 1998.

Her first album in 17 years, entitled Colorful and Piercing, releases on mp3 any day now, with the first single available on her Bandcamp and Soundcloud pages.

Graham began her folk career at a young age, starting in a band called Tracking Buddha in 1996, and even before that she was appearing on radio and in small clubs.

Her work ethic and tenacity won her several ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) awards between 1994 and 96 for her appearances, and her song “Curious” was featured as an outstanding song by the ASCAP in 1995. Graham suffered the tragic loss from suicide of her older brother at 18 years old, and has been an advocate and a voice for suicide prevention ever since.

Spurned on perhaps by her tragedy, Liz Graham’s music and lyrics are nothing if not optimistic, and with “Charcoal on a Canvas,” Colorful and Piercing’s first single, Graham is definitely not lacking in that department.

If you like shiny happy people music, look no further than Liz Graham’s catalog. Her overall sound is folk-cum-indie, with vocals which are almost operatic and may remind listeners of Joni Mitchell with a hint of Alanis Morrisette and Dolores O’Riordan. She seldom has much more accompaniment than her guitar, so her unique sound is mostly found in her song composition. In the long gap since her last album, Graham has not stopped performing, and still tours the northeast frequently.

Folk is generally written in sort of a quiet key, with almost a muted watercolor feel to it. Liz Graham’s sound is generally a bit brighter, and the way she builds the rhythm and layers her vocals over the jovial backing track is a surprise to folk and indie fans alike.

Her lyrics are not always as perky as her music and voice, as she covers some pretty heavy subjects in her first album but because of the more upbeat music, there is a sense of hope which permeates even the saddest of lyrics. Graham claims to be heavily influenced by poets like Robert Louis Stevenson, and has published the lyrics to each of her songs as a stand-alone poetic piece on her website.

In Colorful and Piercing, it seems that Graham is looking to branch out a bit. Rather than the classic folk of her debut album, pop and adult contemporary styles creep into her music on the new album, with mixed results.

The only full track yet released, “Charcoal on a Canvas” seems to have missed the mark a bit. The rhythms are a little strange, and her typical layering technique shows vocals and music clashing rather than creating a harmony. I’m all for experimenting, but it seems like some more editing in post would have been helpful here.

It may be the addition of extra instruments to “Charcoal on a Canvas,” but it seems as though the richness of Graham’s opera singer voice doesn’t really go with the music arrangements. This is the case in many of the songs on Colorful and Piercing, with the exception of “Damaged,” “Quincy Square” and “A Little Bit More.” These three songs are more of Graham’s classic folk style, but they just seem to blend better.

It could just be a taste issue and I definitely don’t begrudge artists who take chances and try something new, but it seems Liz Graham may need a little more time to develop the new styles she is working on. Fans can judge for themselves by listening to “Charcoal on a Canvas” via the player below or they may click here to listen to clips from the rest of the album.

If you like indie folk, Graham’s first album, though hard to come by, is a good add to any playlist. She has many more live performances available to view on YouTube as well.

Actions to Getting a Tattoo You Won"t Regret for the Rest of Your Life

Tattoos last permanently, or at the very least as long as your body lasts, which is virtually permanently in human terms. For a bunch of folks (your manager and your grandpa), this is the main factor not to get them. For other people (you), this is what makes them so fantastic. Your animals as well as your moms and dads will certainly pass away, your home will obtain bulldozed to develop a superhighway, your pals will certainly transfer to New York City. Yet your tattoos? Preventing a full-body burning crash, they will certainly be with you via the entire scary, superb point, up until you are sitting in your lounge chair, incapable to pee without the aid of an in-home treatment aide. Up until finally, you pass out and stop existing. Just how reassuring to understand that a) your memories will be written on your physical body no matter exactly how terribly your brain disintegrates and b) your at home treatment aide will certainly have something quite to take a look at while he’s pulling down your pants for you.

I have 6 tattoos and also I know a remarkable tattooer, so I consider myself enough of an expert to enlighten you on the process of acquiring art completely inscribed on your skin. To totally dedicate to this job, I decided to go get a tattoo and, while it was happening, job interview Derick Montez, which works at Photo Equipment Tattoo. He’s the individual who has actually offered me 3 of my tattoos as well as who is, in my opinion, the best tattoo artist of all time ever before. Derek isn’t really also 30 yet however he apprenticed with prominent graffiti as well as tattoo artist Mike Giant and also is a wonderful aesthetic artist in a lot of various tools, beyond being a recognized tattooer. So, without more ado, your step-by-step overview of getting a tattoo you will not regret for the rest of your life: inspection2

Before your tattoo:

1. Research study! This is THE MOST VITAL OF ALL THE ACTIONS.

Obtaining a good tattoo calls for some real prep work. Baseding on Derick: “The greatest blunder I believe somebody can make is not doing study on the artist that they obtain tattooed by. Tattooing has actually become such a popularized style … more people are tattooing now, more than ever, but simply considering that somebody gets the idea in their head that they want to be a tattooer does not suggest that they have the appropriate training or the appropriate methods. It’s similar to anything else: if you have the cash, you can open up a store, but that doesn’t imply you understand exactly what you’re doing.”.

So consider portfolios online. Derick says: “Most reliable shops have portfolios– what you’re searching for is uniformity in work … you intend to make certain the images are clear, well-known, legible, since a bunch of times people merely put up rubbish pictures … tattoos that are still covered in plastic. If you can locate recovered pictures of individuals’ tattoo work, that is a lot better.”.

I know he corrects because this is exactly just how my ex-boyfriend found Derick: compulsive net browsing to discover the ideal tattoo artist for his first tattoo. I do not have this sort of patience and my initial 3 tattoos are a testament to that (I still enjoy them, yet they are nothing as compared to Derick’s job), so I am extremely thankful that an individual lastly did the study for me. However you should not be so careless! Do the study on your own! You won’t regret it!

2. Do not price shop.

Would certainly you view Craigslist for the cheapest babysitter? Perhaps, this isn’t a parenting driving lesson, however the level is, if some person says he’ll offer you a tattoo for 40 dollars, stroll away. As an alternative, prepare to pay as long as it takes to get top quality job. Choose more affordable footwears or buy your rice in bulk if you wish to save cash, yet when it pertains to fine art that will certainly be on your physical body till you die, don’t expect to pay less than $ONE HUNDRED prior to tip, and also a lot a lot more if you are obtaining something large or adding color.

the-shop.

3. Visit the shop personally.

When you discover someone you think you like, go into the shop and comply with the artist in reality before you in fact get anything done. Initially, the store needs to be clean. Look for work with screen and see how you really feel concerning the visual personally. Then, go with your gut. My very first tattoo, which I acquired when I had to do with 20, was the outcome of something halfway in between a whim as well as a psychotic compulsion, when I chose I needed a tattoo and also jumped on the bus that visited the part of Portland raging with tattoo shops. The very first one I entered into was tidy sufficient, but something concerning it offered me the heebie jeebies and also I came back on the bus as well as got off at a smaller, friendlier area, where I wound up acquiring a small star listed below my left hip.

Derick placed it through this: “Normally, if individuals are visiting put in the time to answer your questions and also not be a cock, they believe in their work … you ought to never actually feel pressured to obtain tattooed right then as well as there.”.

(Side note: You could constantly begin little as well as come back for something bigger when you are ready. 3 years after I ended up that celebrity, the exact same artist offered me the overview of Oregon with a heart in it. Sometimes slowly building up to a bigger item is a good idea.).

If you do your study and locate an actually terrific tattooer, you are 90 percent of the way to getting an outstanding tattoo. The rest of these things will certainly come to be a whole lot simpler, since an excellent, expert tattooer will certainly be looking out for you– they want your tattoo to look incredible given that it represents them. Remember however, this is your body and ultimately you make the decisions. So for better or even worse, the end outcome is your duty.

derickswork.

4. Spend a long time considering the style.

Clearly, this goes without stating however I am visiting state it anyway: don’t end up something you really will be sorry for. Disney princesses, an Aryan Brotherhood clover or anything else that might obtain you killed behind bars, misspelled Chinese idioms, your on-again, off-again boyfriend’s name. These things destroy lives. Pick something with individual definition or something you believe is lovely. Enter ahead of time to speak to your tattoo artist about the layout. My last 3 tattoos started as simply concepts and I pretty much gave Derick cost-free power to do exactly what he really wanted, since he understands a great deal more about tattoos and also making beautiful things compared to I do. I am really delighted with the outcomes.

the-creation.

Day of the tattoo:.

5. Don’t be drunk.

I’m not going to detail this to you. You know much better. Likewise, a good tattoo artist will not tattoo you if you are intoxicated.

6. Consume something just before you go.

No person desires you to pass out. Consume dinner! Bring along some candy to eat on if you are ending up something big done.

7. Don’t come in with a posse.

Derick: “I think a blunder a lot of people can make is entering a tattoo shop with an entire wide variety of close friends. I have actually seen folks can be found in, understand exactly what they want, as well as through the point of view of 4 or 5 other individuals end up acquiring something entirely different or going against the guidance of the tattoo artist.”.

Derick has a bunch of wonderful tattoos and also he says: “Whenever I have actually obtained my tattoos, I have actually done it all by myself … just so I recognize that whatever I’m obtaining is all on me.”.

Bring a good friend if you fidget or if you simply really want the firm. However do not bring a pack. You did your study, bear in mind? This is between you as well as the guest putting it on your physical body. It doesn’t truly matter that your pal with no tattoos believes it would certainly look much better in orange on your left kneecap.

drawing2.

8. Ensure it is truly just what you desire.

The tattoo artist will put a transfer of the tattoo on your body in the location you want it prior to he really begins in with the needle and ink (in this case Derick really made use of me, yet usually it starts with a transfer). See to it you like the dimension and the placement. This is not the time to be easy. Hear the tattooer (not your close friends) yet keep in mind: your body, your choice.

pain2.

9. Approve that this will certainly hurt.

Yes, it will harm. It is needles poking your skin deeply and also quickly. However if it didn’t harmed, would it mean as much? Plus, now rather than being the guest asking their tatted-up close friend, “Oh man, did that hurt?” you will certainly be the person answering, “Yeah, it wasn’t so bad.”.

drock2.

After the tattoo is done:.

10. Idea!

You did your study and also you acquired an awesome tattoo! So suggestion! At the very least 20 percent as well as consistently in cash. Let me repeat that: consistently in cash. So ensure you have enough PRIOR TO YOU REACH THE TATTOO SHOP.

post2.

11. Adhere to the care guidelines.

Derick: “People ought to really treat their tattoo like they ended up a flesh wound.”.

Me: Considering that they did. So clean it with unscented soap, don’t touch it or pick at it, utilize the advised cream, do not take in any water.

True tale: I played a soccer video game right after I acquired my Oregon tattoo. As a result of the extending triggered by running around and also sweating, when the tattoo recovered, the perimeter of the state and the heart in the middle had dots of birthday suit. I had to wait 6 months and also acquire the entire point redone. Not simply did it injured concerning 50 times worse compared to the initial tattoo, now it is elevated like a scar while the rest of my tattoos appear flush with my skin.

So, exactly what much more can I inform you? If you do your study and select a tattooer whose aesthetic you like as well as which provides you a good feeling in your stomach as well as you end up a tattoo that won’t compel you to join a white supremacist gang in prison, and after that you look after it, you will end up with a piece of art on your physical body that no one could ever before eliminate. Best of luck!

Bare-faced cheek of tattoo

NOT many can claim to have their face tattooed on another player’s bum cheek.

Warrington Wolves forward Ben Harrison can.

The big prop or loose forward’s season started this week knowing that when he is dishing out some heavy treatment to opposition beefcakes, his reproduced face is also likely to be running around another rugby pitch somewhere else across the country.

The bizarre scenario is the result of a drunken decision during Harrison’s stag do in Benidorm during the off-season.

But Harrison says 22-year-old pal and former Warrington teammate Ryan Shaw, who starts his Championship campaign with Bradford Bulls this weekend, is happy to have his cheeky permanent reminder of his fellow Cumbrian.

“He’s made up with it,” says Harrison. “Ask him now about being drunk at the time and does he have any regrets and he says ‘Are you joking? It’s awesome!’ “I didn’t know anything about it until after he’d done it.

“We went on a night out and he came back about 12 o’clock the next day with that done.

“I just think it’s hilarious. He’s a funny bloke anyway. He’s a lovely kid and he made the stag do as good as it was with some of his antics.”

Harrison, who joined current Wolves teammates Chris Hill and Ben Westwood in getting married during the off-season, shook off a rib injury from the friendly against Hull Kingston Rovers on January 25 to take his place in the 17 against Salford Red Devils at the weekend.

Having suffered probably more than his fair share of serious injuries in recent seasons, the 27-year-old England international is hoping for a clear run and some silverware in 2015.

“It would be good to have an injury-free year. By the end of last season I was held together by tape pretty much,” he said.

“But that’s part of rugby league, it’s a contact sport and especially with playing in the middle I don’t think you can avoid it. It’s the same for all players, and some injuries are more severe than others.

“With sports science and recovery now reaching the levels they are at, we are creating machines.

“Players are that much faster, stronger, fitter, so the collisions are that much more intense and there are bound to be some repercussions.

“Injuries will be one of them but I think the physicality is why people in general love the sport – that’s why I do.”

He added: “As a team, the goals this year are the same as before.

“We want to perform every week and be up there at the end of the season for the silverware.

“In the past (during Tony Smith’s reign as coach) we’ve reached a final or won the Challenge Cup so to have a dry year in 2014 was disappointing.

“We’re a new squad, it’s a lot younger now, but as a group we are focused and the pre-season training was intense as well as of a really high standard.

“If we continue to pull together it should all stand us in good stead.

“Last year was always going to be a little bit of transition with losing the likes of Lee Briers late in the planning, then players needed to be blooded to give them confidence.

“I thought the likes of Gareth O’Brien really shone at the back end of last year. All the young lads will be all the better for the experiences of last year and that will help us in the long run.”

Piercing shop lives up to prestigious expectations

“It’s like the difference between a titanium hip replacement joint and a spoon.” – Anthony Watts

Prestige Piercing, a piercing and fine body jewelry studio, is located a few blocks from Marshall University’s campus, making it a popular place for students.

Anthony Watts, owner of Prestige Piercing, found his inspiration for piercing in high school.

“When I was in high school, I really wanted stretched earlobes,” Watts said. “I turned 18, stopped in a tattoo shop and had my ears punched at a six gauge, then I had my lip pierced, and then my nostril. I loved it. I loved piercings. I wanted to do them.”

Watts is the only local authorized retailer of actual hand-polished professional implant grade titanium jewelry, which is considered industry standard.

Watts laughed as he described what implant jewelry is like.

“It’s like the difference between a titanium hip replacement joint and a spoon,” Watts said. “One is specifically manufactured and certified to be biocompatible and implantable, and the other clearly is not.”

Marshall student Jorden Lucas has multiple piercings by Watts and said she is satisfied with all of them.

“I go to Anthony because he really knows what he’s doing, he takes care of his shop and all of his customers really well,” Lucas said. “I’ve already recommended him multiple times. I’ve never had any trouble with any of my piercings he’s done.”

Watts said he cannot stress the importance of the safety of piercings enough, which is why he is a registered certified professional piercing technician in West Virginia.

“The best part of my job is when my client looks in the mirror after the procedure is finished and sees their new addition. It’s a good feeling to make a stranger happy.” – Anthony Watts

Watts said he practices excellent cross-contamination prevention techniques. He has Red Cross blood borne pathogen, adult first aid and CPR and Occupational Safety and Health Administration exposure control training.

“It’s so very important to be pierced by a professional because unfortunately we live in a day and age where we have blood borne pathogens like Hepatitis, MRSA and HIV,” Watts said. “Reputable professionals will always be highly trained to prevent cross-contamination and have appropriate medical grade autoclaves to process and sterilize equipment and jewelry before it ever comes in contact with a client.”

Rikki Meckstroth, former Huntington resident who goes to the University of Tampa, always comes back to Huntington to get her piercings.

“The cleanliness of the shop and the professionalism Watts has is unmatchable,” Meckstroth said.

Watts said the most common piercings among students are nostrils, navels and septums, in that order.

“The best part of my job is when my client looks in the mirror after the procedure is finished and sees their new addition,” Watts said. “It’s a good feeling to make a stranger happy.”

Watts said he does not hesitate turning down a client for a procedure if his or her body does not have the correct anatomy for the particular piercing they want.

“That’s the worst part of my job, having to turn down a client for a procedure,” Watts said. “If it’s at a high risk for rejection or in an area that won’t heal properly or look bad, I won’t do it. I put my name on every single piercing I do. A lot of businesses would just take your money, but I care about your health and safety and if a piercing is going to be problematic to you, I’ll decline to do it or show you some other options.”

Prestige Piercing is located on 834 Sixth Ave. and is open noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
