Airbrushing photos of students with piercings at a country high school was a mistake, the principal has admitted.

Daylesford Secondary College student Annamieke Visser told Tom Elliott her nose piercing was removed for her annual school photo.

“From my friends photos, they have had pimples out,” she said.

“One kid in my year had his monobrow photoshopped out.

“They said to us it wasn’t school policy to have these piercings but we never got told to take them out.

“Everyday we go to school with these piercings never once did we get told off.”

Full statement from school principal Graeme Holmes:

I acknowledge that we took the wrong approach in photoshopping piercings out of our school photos and I can assure the school community it will not happen again.

We will be offering the original individual portrait photos for those who wish to exchange the photos at no cost to families.

Our school uniform policy is set by our school council, in consulation with our school community. We do allow our students to have facial piercings – however due to safety reasons, those piercings may only be studs, and cannot include rings, sleepers or hoops. This is made clear in our school uniform policy, which is available on our website.

Next year, we will ensure that students have plenty of notice that they will only be able to participate in school photos if they meet our uniform policy.

3AW Drive host Tom Elliott said it was absurd.

“I don’t know how you could outlaw monobrows,” he said. “Changing school photos is ludicrous.”
