Tattoos should be seen as form of expression

In today’s society there is a ton of discrimination toward tattoos and piercings, which are now considered a form of personal expression. There are many views on this type of self-expression: some do not like it while others embrace it. Another view is that people still connect it with the big bad biker or a criminal. We are way past that point in society — for us to gain full equality we need to let others express themselves how they deem fit.

In the work environment, “many employers have a cookie cutter mentality of how their workers should dress and be perceived,” as said by Erika Icon in Common Sense Advice for Workers with Body Art. By this she means that when being interviewed if you do not look how they want their company to be represented, there is a very high possibility they will not hire you, which is completely legal. What is illegal is if they fire you for having tattoos or piercings after you have already been working at their company.

According to Diane Craig, president of Toronto-based image Consultant Company Corporate Class Inc., tattoos and piercings are still considered a “distraction,” and “We’re socially visually oriented.” Although I do firmly believe if that’s what you want, then go for it, others might not take you seriously if there is a tattoo on the side of your face. On the other hand I would find it cool if my doctor had a ton of tattoos on his arms or, if he dared, on his neck. Yet Kat Von D and other heavily tattooed/pierced women are considered some of the most beautiful women alive, and men are considered highly attractive when tattooed and pierced.

Tattoos and piercings are a form of expression; as an outside person you don’t know what that tattoo means to a person. Their tattoos could be a joke from a friend who has passed or it could be something of a loved one that meant a lot. Or those piercings they have are something they have always wanted and that is their choice. When judging someone on their appearance it is the same as judging a book by its cover. Society makes a big deal out of judging a person by their looks, yet it always happens and that is extremely hypocritical.

Tattoos and piercings are a lifestyle choice for some, like religion is a lifestyle choice too. Why should people who believe in Christianity or Catholicism be allowed free reign, while individuals with tattoos and piercings get to be judged and looked at with disgust? How is that fair? These individuals probably believe in a certain religion too; they could be Christians or Catholics (and etc.), but they can’t freely practice their religion because they are judged by others who believe in the same religion.

Nothing is wrong with expressing your love for someone that is dear to you by getting a tattoo that signifies their memory or having a piercing to show how they feel or how they want to look. Piercings and tattoos are not just a means of rebellion but a means of self expression. Tattoos can mean a way of moving on from a rough patch in one’s life and someone judging them on that could be a setback for them. People with tattoos realize some mothers move their children away when they see them in public or give those disgusted looks, but what if that person is one of the most giving individuals you have ever met? Individuals with tattoos and piercings are made as pariahs in society because they look different, yet they are still one of us, still a human being with feelings.

Another form of discrimination is the discrimination of parents with tattoos who are judged on their parenting skills because of their tattoos and piercings. Does the appearance of one determine who they are in life? Do having tattoos and piercings affect one’s ability to skillfully be a parent? As a child with a parent who has multiple tattoos and piercings, I can say they have no effect on her parenting skills. Those tattoos and piercings have no affect on me to where I see her in a different light.

I feel it effects a child if their parent does not let them have their own opinion on tattoos and piercings. Yes, once a tattoo is inked on your body it is there forever, but that is a chance some are willing to take because that is how they feel. I am one of those who want a tattoo — for me it is a way to express and memorialize my father’s passing away when I was younger. I also realize and understand the effects that could have on me in the long run. The question is, can people accept the fact that it is my choice and stop associating these things with just criminals and the old views of bikers.

Tattoos and piercings do not dictate the character of an individual. Their personality does, and that’s what really matters.

Ouch! You'll never guess what Katie Price has had pierced!

Instead of opting for more surgery, it looks as though Katie Price has chosen a less permanent way to update her ever-changing look.

The 36-year-old businesswoman was spotted on a night out over the weekend, but we couldn’t help but notice a little glint under her black vest top, kinda around the nipple area…

Is it a piercing we spy?

Katie, who was seen out in Essex with hubby Kieran Hayler seems to have had a metal bar placed through her left nipple. We certainly admire KP – that’s gotta be one painful piercing!

It was only recently that Kate underwent an operation to remove her breast implants but clearly all is well in the boob department now if Katie‘s chosen to have one of THE most painful piercings, ever.

Ahh well. Katie HAS given birth to five children AND already has quite a collection of tattoos and piercings, so she’s obviously a pretty tough cookie!

How could we forget Katie‘s infamous wrist tattoo of a crown with daughter Princess‘s name underneath? Whilst married to Peter Andre, Kate flaunted her romance by having Pete‘s name etched above the crown. Of course, when the couple split in 2009, Ms Price had a huge black cross inked over her former hubby’s name. Eeesh!

Other Pricey tattoos include the initials of sons Harvey, 12, and Junior, 10, on the back of her neck, and a ginormous garter tatt etched onto her right leg, which Kate had done as she is ‘absolutely addicted to underwear’.

Kate‘s not the only female celeb with a seriously high pain threshold.

Singer Christina Milian also opted for a nipple piercing.
The 33-year-old mum-of-one said it was so painful that is was ‘worse than childbirth’! Yikes!

‘It was quicker, though. Childbirth, 19 hours. Piercing, two seconds,’ added the US star.

Very true.

We’re sure new pics will be revealed soon of Kate‘s new piercing…watch this space!

8 times Katie Price has surprised us by being more of a feminist than you might expect

“Star Wars” fans, if this weekend’s Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim is any indication, are a patient lot. Thousands camped out Wednesday night to be in the same room as director J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, and lines to buy exclusive convention merchandise could stretch up to three hours.

That’s about how long, for instance, it took me to purchase a wall clock in the shape of Salacious B. Crumb, the rat-like pal of Jabba the Hutt in “Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi.” Others waited an hour or so to purchase ornaments. Some waited for love (speed dating sessions for men seeking women were booked by Friday morning, dashing my hopes of a “Star Wars romance) and still others waited hours for a glimpse of new video game “Star Wars: Battlefront” or a chance to have a photo taken in a mock Millennium Falcon.

It isn’t really a surprise that “Star Wars” die-hards would have such endurance. They’ve been waiting 10 years for a new film, and even longer for one that sees the return of beloved characters such as Han Solo and Luke Skywalker. Much of the four-day Celebration, which concludes Sunday, was dedicated to hyping the upcoming Abrams-directed “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” for which a new trailer was unveiled on Thursday.

The trailer, however, is under 2 minutes long. A tattoo, meanwhile, is forever.

A still-growing tradition of Star Wars Celebration is getting inked, as 45 tattoo artists set up makeshift shops on the convention floor this weekend and engraved “Star Wars”-only designs on the faithful. Getting tattooed, however, however, meant essentially giving up one’s day . For some, that entailed seven or eight hours of missed panels, missed autographs, missed photos and missed networking.

But again, “Star Wars” fans are a patient lot, and coming home from Celebration with a personalized tattoo was worth skipping out on an afternoon of, say, watching droid races.

“It’s totally worth it,” said Angela Byrd, 28, of Modesto.

She was getting a full-color R2-D2 framed with angelic wings along with the phrase “you’re my only hope,” words made famous by Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) in “Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope.” It’s her second “Star Wars” tattoo, and positioned just below a mini-Millennium Falcon blasting out of a crescent wreath.

“I’ve never gotten a tattoo at a convention,” Byrd said. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance. There’s so many people out here wanting to get one by an artist who’s coming from another city or another country. I think it’s worth it, totally, even if I’m missing a little bit of the convention.”

Tattoos have had a presence at Star Wars Celebration since 2005, when Shane Turgeon set up a booth to display his archive of “Star Wars” tattoo images. Turgeon has compiled two volumes of his “The Force and the Flesh” books, coffee table-ready collections of “Star Wars” body art, and runs the Edmonton, Canada-based shop Shades of Grey.

Turgeon, along with Marc Draven, began organizing the on-site tattoo pavilion at 2010’s Celebration event in Orlando, Fla. That year, there were 25 artists at the show. Turgeon said about 200 applied to be in Anaheim this weekend, and the 45 chosen were asked to pay a fee to Lucasfilm in order to become officially licensed “Star Wars” artists.

“Here, you get a ‘Star Wars’ tattoo by your fellow ‘Star Wars’ geeks. They understand you. They understand what you want,” said Turgeon, who added that with more films on the way the tattoo pavilion was only likely to grow.

That Lucasfilm stamp of approval is a big deal, said artist Damian Cain. He traveled to Celebration from Somerset, England, and was planning to do one tattoo per day. He said he probably wouldn’t make up the cost of travel, but immediate financial gain wasn’t his incentive for coming to Southern California.

“This is a massive opportunity,” he said. “To be  a Lucasfilm-licensed artist is a dream come true. I’ve been obsessed with ‘Star Wars’ since I was tiny, so to grow up and get into tattooing and be almost officially validated is, like, ‘Wow.’”

The Bay Area’s Alain Bloch has wanted a “Star Wars” tattoo for a number of years and jumped at the chance to get one done at Celebration. His tattoo, a heavily detailed rendition of the script for the Jedi Code, was likely to take a full afternoon.

“I definitely want to get tattooed by someone who loves the culture and is willing to come out and dedicate their time,” said Bloch, 34. “I feel like there’s a strong connection there. I also feel just the significance of Celebration. What better place to get a ‘Star Wars’ tattoo to remind myself of this time, this place, these people.”

As for why he choose the Jedi Code, Bloch said flatly, “I’m a Jedi.” He isn’t kidding, as Bloch is a member of the Saber Guild, which puts on lightsaber demonstrations and was hosting a number of performances throughout the weekend.

Byrd is working on a full half-sleeve of “Star Wars” artwork, and has had both of her pieces done by the same artist, the first in New York and the second this weekend. “I’m girly, obviously, so I wanted it to be girly,” she said, explaining the inspiration behind the angel wings. “I didn’t want it to be super manly looking.”

This was the second Celebration for Vinny Romanelli, who was tattooing Byrd.

“I don’t really do conventions anymore,” said Romanelli. “They’re kind of hectic and we’re out of our comfort zone with the set-up and everything. But I’ve always loved ‘Star Wars’ and to be able to do what I love, tattooing, in the middle of something else that I’ve always loved, it’s, like, the best combination ever.”

David James of Arcadia would agree. He was getting a portrait of Darth Nihilus on his upper arm, a tattoo that will compliment his portrait of Boba Fett. He has non-“Star Wars” tattoos, including those that honor rock acts the Misfits and Pantera, but the 33-year-old said his “Star Wars” ink bridges generations. He recalled the reaction of his parents when he got his first “Star Wars” tattoo at age 19.

“My parents don’t like tattoos at all,” he said, “but they saw it and they were like, ‘Oh, it’s ‘Star Wars,’ it’s cool.’ I was kind of scared to show them when I first got it. I thought they were going to kill me. But they were like, ‘OK, that’s really cool. It’s ‘Star Wars.’ We like it.’”
