HEALTH checks are being offered to customers of a former piercing and tattoo studio in Newport.
A total of 550 former clients of the business have been offered the precautionary checks after five customers who had piercings all suffered serious skin infections according to health chiefs.
The premises concerned traded as Blue Voodoo, Sun Tattoo Studio and Flesh Wound at two premises in Commercial Street, Newport, between May 2013 and January 2015, said Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
The connection between the people who suffered skin infections was spotted by a doctor who treated four of them.
But the health board said the confirmed cases could indicate a low risk of transmission of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C and an extremely low risk of HIV transmission for all clients of the premises concerned.
The people sent letters offering them checks will be able to have a blood test to check for all three, although officials have stressed there is a very small risk of picking up any blood borne infections through piercing or tattooing.
No cases of HIV transmission from tattooing or piercing have been documented worldwide, according to Dr Brendan Mason, consultant epidemiologist for Public Health Wales, who was at a press conference this morning.
The board said the business/s concerned had ceased trading and were being investigated by Newport Council’s environmental health team.
Clinics staffed by specialist nurses have been set up in the health board area and a helpline has been set up for people to book an appointment – tel: 02920 402528.
