Coroner Determines Body in Forest Result of Suicide

By Oliver Cory

A hiker found a young woman’s body in the Arcata Community Forest before 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10.

Chief Deputy Coroner Ernie Stewart of the Humboldt County Coroner’s Office said they have determined it was a suicide.

Stewart said they have not been able to identify the woman. They are hoping the public will help them.

Stewart said she looked like she was about 19 to 23 years old. She was 5’3 to 5’4 and weighed about 125 pounds. She was wearing a shirt that said “gypsy soul” on the front and skinny jeans with a skirt over them. Stewart said she had a few tattoos that people might recognize.

“On her back she had a thin outline of angel wings that essentially covered all of her back,” Stewart said.

He said she had what looked like a four-sided star tattoo on her back, a large red rose tattoo that covered most of her hip area and a black scorpion tattoo by her lower abdomen.

Stewart said anyone who might know who she is should call the Humboldt County Coroner’s Office or the Arcata Police Department.

The Arcata Community Forest is just east of the Humboldt State University campus. The body was near the parking lot that is closest to 14th Street. The trail above the body was closed while APD investigated the scene.

The number for the Arcata Police Department is 1-707-822-2428. The number for the Humboldt County Coroner’s Office is 1-707-445-7242.
September 10 was World Suicide Prevention Day.
