The stories behind tattoos vary from person to person. Each one is as unique as the person.
And Steven Luchini enjoys these stories, though he doesn’t have any tattoos himself. That’s the reason he and Abel “Fonzy” Otero have started the project “Tattoo Confessions: People and the Stories Behind Their Ink.” The project will include a website, a YouTube channel and a book.
Otero owns Fonzy’s Barber Shop and over the years he has heard a plethora of stories on the meaning of tattoos. Luchini says he wants the project to delve deeper into the meaning of the tattoo and what it represents.
So far, the duo have interviewed and videotaped 70 to 80 men and women with tattoos.
The also are working with photographers Andrea Harrell and Elijah Candelario, who have both made color and black-and-white images for the project, some of which will be on exhibit for the open house tonight.
Though he has no tattoos, Luchini was hoping to have a tattoo by this point in the project.
“I’ve been struggling with what to get and what it represents,” he says. “It will have to be something with meaning for me.”
Luchini and Otero are hosting an open house to talk with more people about tattoos.
For the past few months, they have been busy working on the project. Luchini says a website will be up soon.
“This is a project that is going to be big,” he says. “We’ve had some stories the past couple of days where we were in tears. The stories are so compelling. We want to capture these stories.”
Those who can’t make the open house but want to be in the project or learn more about it can call 634-9465 or 715-7274, or send an email to tattooconfessions@gmail.com.
